Is Small Business Ownership Right For You?

If you’re reading this, congrats! That means you are considering small business ownership, which is no small dream.

I’m a small business owner x3 and know a thing or two about this journey. I’ve had some amazing moments and others I’d soon rather forget, but even having the desire to go after an idea is something you should be really, really proud of.

I was recently asked what everyone should think about before starting this journey, and this is what I came up with…

1. Thoroughly Research Your Business Idea: Before diving into something brand new, conduct comprehensive market research to validate your business idea. If you’re getting into an already established market, research ways to help you stand out from your competition – what will set you apart? Identify potential gaps in the market and assess the demand for your product or service. Having an idea is one thing, but having a plan will set you up for success.

2. Create a Solid Business Plan: Ideas are great and trust me, I have had many throughout the years, but an idea can only take you so far. Develop a well thought out business plan that outlines your goals. It will serve as a roadmap and help you through your first couple years. It will also be a great tool to assist you in making informed decisions as your business grows.

3. Secure Adequate Financing: You know the saying, “it takes money to make money,” right? Well, that really is true when starting your own business. Determine how much capital (money) you need to start and sustain your business, until it becomes profitable. If you do not plan on self-funding, explore various options such as loans, investors, crowdfunding, or grants.

4. Build a Strong Online Presence: In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. While setting a budget consider things like creating a professional website, setting up social media profiles, marketing, and how you can optimize your business for search engines (SEO). Social media such as Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok which are all free and can literally change the game for small businesses.

5. Focus on Customer Satisfaction: Your customers are the lifeblood of your business. Continually seek feedback to improve your products or services. Build strong relationships with your customers to foster loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals, which can be invaluable for small businesses. At the end of the day, without customers you don’t have a business. Spend some of your energy building relationships with them and I promise it’ll pay off.

Bonus Tip: Stay Adaptable and Resilient: The business landscape is constantly changing. Be prepared to adapt to new challenges and opportunities. Stay resilient during tough times and continuously look for ways to innovate and grow.

Remember that starting a small business can be challenging, but with careful planning and dedication, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Seek advice from mentors, join local business networks, and don’t be afraid to pivot if your initial plans need adjusting.
